Independent’s Day 2017
22 July @ 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm$68
This July, Melbourne will host a one day festival celebrating a selection of extremely rare whiskies. This left-of-centre spirits show aims to exhibit uncommon single malts selected by independent bottlers from Scotland, Australia and other parts of the world.
These bottlings are all one-offs, so once these whiskies run out, they’re gone for good.
While most publicly available spirits are branded by their producers, independent bottlers draw on stock from a range of distilleries; defunct and active. These nomad brands roam distilleries for interesting single barrels to create unique, one-off expressions. Even though brands often pass on unconventional barrels to ensure consistency, independent bottlers can highlight their individuality and celebrate the whisky’s unique traits.
Whisky from 35 distilleries, varying in age from three to 26 years old, will be on taste. No more than a few hundred scarce bottles generally enter the Australian market and it’s extremely rare for them to be poured out for free. Bottles on taste have been valued at up to $550 with a few extremely rare bottles for sale at an even higher price point.
Whiskies from nine independent bottlers will be on show, accompanied by food from Masterchef contestant Sam Gant. This gathering of independent bottlers will be the first of its kind in Australia and is set to bring together some of the world’s rarest, never to be repeated whiskies.–
